Where does tradition begin? Is it a curious notion that proves difficult to isolate or can it be traced to a single event? A turning point that creates a groundswell of energy and momentum. For a small insurance company founded in New Hamburg in1880, that crucial turning point occurred in1953.

In 1953, J.B Josslin, decided to leave a successful career with one of Canada’s largest insurers to get back to what mattered most to him. For J.B., the insurance business needed to be about more than just protection. It had to be about connection as well - Connection with people. And specifically to the people of his home community in Southern Ontario. Connection on an individual and personal level to provide them with the security and peace of mind to help them prepare for a future full of challenges and possibilities. J.B.’s relentless passion for representing his clients’ best interests was matched by his thirst for industry expertise. A winning combination that earned him a stellar reputation as a hands-on community advocate and insurance expert. He was the perfect person to take over the reins of what was then known as Hatter Insurance and in 1953, began the dedication to Protection and Connection that have become the hallmarks of the company we know today as Josslin Insurance Brokers.

Don Wagler, a fellow New Hamburg businessman saw a kindred spirit in J.B. Josslin. The two shared a passion for the insurance business and a matching devotion to the community of New Hamburg. In 1975, with J.B. approaching retirement, Don and his wife Rose purchased the business and together saw to it that the tradition of protection and connection the business had been built on would not only continue, but become the firm’s guiding principle for growth and service over the next 35 years and for future generations to come. A firm commitment to these goals has seen Josslin grow from a single location in1975 to an Ontario industry leader today with 5 full-service offices employing 50 highly knowledgeable professionals dedicated to continuing J.B. Josslin’s legacy of protection and connection.   

Today, Don and Rose’s sons Scott and Steve Wagler have taken over the reins of the day-to day operation of Josslin and are more committed than ever to the company’s heritage of protection and connection.  But with a clear eye to the future, shaping and adapting the company to the changing landscape of today’s insurance industry. While staying true to the founding principles, Scott, Steve and everyone in the Josslin family are intent on becoming the preferred choice for commercial and personal insurance products by continuing to keep one step ahead of the evolving marketplace. A constant focus on adding value to the broker/client relationship is what drives the business today with a firm commitment to service leadership. Josslin prides itself on handling claims personally on a 24 hour, 7 days a week basis. But handling claims is just the beginning. On-going client education to ensure the highest level of protection and a genuine commitment to the community’s well being, continued growth and prosperity are what set Josslin Insurance Brokers apart. A leadership position within the Ontario insurance industry is also part of the Josslin mandate with Scott serving on industry technology committees and Steve having served as the president of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario.

The Josslin ideals of protection and connection can only be achieved with great people to carry the torch forward. A dedicated team of professionals fulfilling the mandates of protection and connection on a daily basis through genuine caring, a commitment to excellence, on-going education and a willingness to serve. A proud history and a legacy of service, however, are hardly a guarantee of future success and never has that been truer than in today’s ever-changing marketplace.
